An idyllic setting just out of Seymour, Hughes Creek is a great place to sit and relax, have a picnic or try a spot of fishing. Hughes Creek is very popular in the summer months for camping and other recreational pursuits.

Mount Disappointment State Forest

Hume and Hovell named the mountain in 1824 when they attempted to climb the summit expecting to see Port Phillip Bay. They failed because of dense undergrowth. As well as gold mining which took place in about 1870, saw milling began in the area in 1880 which continued until 1939. The forest is a very popular recreation area for pursuits including horse riding and bushwalking. There are three walking tracks, ranging from 15 to one hour. Each camp/picnic area has tables, toilets, BBQ’s and water.

Formerly the site of a forestry camp, Freemans is now regularly occupied by picnickers and other day trippers. The open nature of the site makes it good for families and other large groups. Get onto Main Road from Ennis Road, which branches off the Hume Freeway just south of the Tallarook township exit – the campground is 11 km east of the Hume. Note: while conventional vehicles can access Freemans, other areas of the forest require a 4WD.
Covering an area of 5,100ha, the area is very popular for horse riding, camping and bushwalking. Toilets, BBQ’s and tables are situated in Freeman’s picnic area and a picnic/camping area is at Falls Creek Reservoir.

Trawool Reservoir Camping Area

This 5000 ha forest is threaded by dirt trails and is popular with those in a 4WD and motorcyclists. It lies to the east of the Hume Freeway between the towns of Broadford and Seymour. Access to the network of tracks within the forest is via Ennis Road.
You’ll need a 4WD to get out to Trawool Reservoir, an old water storage at the northern edge of the forest. Drive along Main Rd and turn onto East Falls Road. For some good views of the surrounding area, head up Mount Hickey Road to the summit of Mount Hickey, also known as Mount Tallarook. Hang-gliders launch themselves from Meadow Hill Lookout.
